The clock on the right is reputably the one that Henry VIII gave to Ann Boleyn as a wedding present in 1533. It has many features that resemble the English Lantern Clocks that followed much later. The clock was probably a commission given by Henry to a continental maker.
English Lantern Clock making started around 1580 and the well recorded examples of the Robert Harvey clocks c.1600 are extremely rare as are any pre 1630 clocks. After the formation of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1631 such makers as William Bowyer, Francis Foreman, Peter Closon, Nicholas Coxeter, Henry Stevens, Thomas Knifton and John Ebsworth were probably the most prolific in Lantern Clock production.
